Pregnancy Scare After Tubal Ligation

First of all, I know this will sound really really crazy.

I was ligated right after my last caesarean operation last May of 2016 so pretty much I already have a very very slim possibility of getting pregnant again. I am exclusively breastfeeding our youngest since birth so I had my period back when he was around 10 or 11 months old.

Since I had my period back, it never missed, not even a single day (it’s always a 28-day cycle) so when it missed for a whole week, I really started thinking crazy stuff.

First thing I thought of was “If I’m pregnant, I’ll give birth by June.” Not a single feeling of excitement, nope.  Somehow I just wanted to jump out of the whole nine-month pregnancy journey, which I already cherished with my three children. This time I’m more on mentally preparing for the pains of C-section (if ever I’ll actually give birth again).

Few hours passed after that, I decided to take a pregnancy test, which came out negative. By this time you would think that I should have stopped worrying. Well, let me tell you about my third (and hopefully last) pregnancy. The moment I missed my period, all seven tests came out negative. I annoyingly asked my husband every single day for one whole week if he’s sure we’re safe. He always answered “you’re not pregnant, you’re just crazy” and laughed it off. On the night of the 7th day missed period, we decided to have a little bonding with some friends. I got really really drunk that night. Even when we’re drinking, I asked him if he’s sure I’m not pregnant. He said all tests came out negative so I shouldn’t worry. Eighth day of missed period came, still no visitor. I decided to get a serum pregnancy test later that day and BOOM! Yep, positive and he’s 1 year and 5 months old now. Our son have congenital hypothyroidism and I’m not sure if me getting drunk before I confirmed I’m  pregnant has anything to do with it but somehow I’m still blaming myself for it. If only I’ve been more careful, if only I trusted my instinct more than those seven false-negative tests maybe he wouldn’t have it. That’s why I kept worrying.

I searched if it’s really possible to get pregnant right away after ligation. DOH have their FAQs regarding Bilateral Tubal Ligation but it doesn’t really offer any enough explanations or answers so I tried to search in other sites. Here are some from AmericanPregnancy.org and MayoClinic.org which offered more statistical answers.

Tubal ligation is one of the most effective ways to prevent pregnancy, with rates of pregnancy around 1/1,000 after the first year, and between 2-10/1,000 after five years. Although the possibility of becoming pregnant after tubal ligation is low, the chance is still there. Unfortunately, after the procedure, the risk of experiencing an ectopic pregnancy increases if pregnancy were to occur.

In the first year after a tubal ligation, it’s estimated that fewer than 1 out of 100 women will get pregnant. The younger you are at the time of a tubal ligation, the more likely the sterilization is to fail. If you do conceive after having a tubal ligation, there’s a higher chance that the pregnancy will be ectopic — when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube.

After reading more articles about it, I’m pretty sure that my chances are actually pretty slim but it didn’t remove that budging feeling. “It’s pretty slim, but what if?”

Later that night, I decided to ask in a mom group if anyone experienced pregnancy after ligation. There are less than a hundred or two who responded and most of them knows a friend or a friend’s wife who really got pregnant after ligation.

Some nurses from that mommy group even explained that there are different types of ligation, three of the most common are tying, burning and cutting. (I don’t know their accurate medical terms, they didn’t mention it either). Any of those procedures still gives you a tiny little bit of chance of pregnancy.

With all those information that I have, I said to myself that I’ll wait for five more days (which is November 1) before I go for serum pregnancy test. Well, guess what? I had it done right the next day. Oh, and here’s the craziest part! I got my period right after having that damn test, like I clearly just wasted money on it.

And all this happened in a span of two days. Yup, two f*cking days.

It sounds stupid and funny to me now but at that time, I was really worried not just for my health but for the baby if ever I’m actually pregnant. So remember, if you’re not missing one whole month for your period, don’t freak out right away.

Gaahh.
